Rutgers finds NJ Medicaid Reforms Increased Suboxone Access
Researchers from Rutgers University found that New Jersey Medicaid reforms increased buprenorphine prescriptions for opioid addiction treatment. Patients may receive buprenorphine through medications such as Suboxone.
New Jersey introduced three major Medicaid reforms during 2019. First, the state removed prior authorization requirements for buprenorphine prescriptions. Medicaid also increased office-based treatment reimbursements and established regional addiction centers.
Following these changes, prescription growth increased by 36 percent through December 2020. New Jersey outpaced other states in buprenorphine prescription growth among Medicaid patients. The findings show how reducing treatment barriers can expand recovery options across New Jersey.
